Community-Based Goat Breeding Program Launched

Through collaborative efforts with local communities and stakeholders, SEARI is transforming goat productivity in Gofa Zone. The program empowers 54 families with improved genetics, modern breeding techniques, and sustainable livestock management practices.

About This Impact Story

In partnership with the Gofa Zone Agriculture Department and Sawla Agricultural Research Center, SEARI has launched a community-based goat breeding program in Zaba Kebele, Uba Debretsehay District. The program targets 54 organized households and aims to significantly improve goat productivity through selective breeding of high-quality local goats. During the launch event, SEARI Director General Dr. Abiyot Mebrate emphasized that the institute is generating tangible results through problem-solving research conducted across its five research centers. By identifying and selectively breeding superior goats, the program enhances productivity and increases the income of farmers and pastoralists. The program also includes training and capacity building to ensure farmers can independently manage and sustain the breeding improvements. This initiative supports Ethiopia’s national agricultural transformation agenda, contributing to food security, poverty reduction, and the Lemlem Turufat Initiative for dairy and livestock development.
