Community-Based Goat Breeding Program Launched
Through collaborative efforts with local communities and stakeholders, SEARI is transforming goat productivity in Gofa Zone. The program empowers 54 families with improved genetics, modern breeding techniques, and sustainable livestock management practices.
Model Technology Villages – A Blueprint for Transformation
SEARI's Areka Center has established nine model technology villages across Wolaita Zone, bringing cutting-edge agricultural innovations directly to 940 farming families. This integrated approach demonstrates how improved crop varieties, livestock technologies, and sustainable practices can transform rural livelihoods.
Innovation in Action for Sustainable Agriculture
Over 300 farmers and stakeholders gathered in Boloso Bombe to witness transformative agricultural innovations. From vitamin-rich orange fleshed sweet potato to protein packed faba beans and nutrient dense moringa, these technologies are building food and nutrition security across Wolaita Zone.
Solar Powered Irrigation for Climate Resilience
In partnership with the Food System Resilience Program (FSRP), SEARI is piloting solar powered small scale irrigation systems at Areka Center. This sustainable technology enables farmers to grow crops year round, reduce dependence on unreliable rainfall, and build resilience against climate variability.
Preserving Genetic Resources for Food Security
SEARI's Areka Center hosts over 720 enset varieties, creating one of Ethiopia's most valuable genetic resource collections. This living gene bank safeguards biodiversity, enables the development of disease resistant and climate resilient varieties, and secures the future of a crop that sustains over 20 million Ethiopians.
