Areka Agricultural Research Center has established a comprehensive enset gene bank, conserving over 720 distinct enset varieties. This living collection is a vital national resource, safeguarding the genetic diversity of enset – a staple food crop for more than 20 million people across Ethiopia. The gene bank enables researchers to identify and develop improved varieties that are resistant to pests and diseases, tolerant to drought, and capable of producing higher yields. Enset is increasingly recognized as a climate smart crop due to its exceptional resilience to drought and its ability to store food for extended periods. By preserving this genetic wealth, SEARI is ensuring that current and future generations have access to the genetic resources needed to address emerging challenges such as climate change, population growth, and emerging plant diseases.
