Jinka Agricultural Research Center has achieved remarkable success in developing improved sorghum varieties that demonstrate yield increases of up to 100% compared to local landraces, promising a significant boost for dryland farmers across South Ethiopia. After years of rigorous field trials and participatory variety selection with farming communities, the center has identified several sorghum varieties that exhibit exceptional drought tolerance, resistance to major pests and diseases, and superior grain quality. The improved varieties are specifically adapted to the challenging agro-ecological conditions of the lowland and midland areas, where sorghum is a critical staple crop for food security and household income. Farmers who participated in the on-farm trials have reported not only higher yields but also better grain quality, reduced crop losses, and improved resilience during dry spells.

The success of the improved sorghum varieties has generated significant interest across the region, with demand for the new seeds far exceeding initial projections. Jinka Center is now scaling up seed multiplication to meet farmer demand and expanding its dissemination efforts through demonstration plots, field days, and partnerships with extension services. The center is also exploring opportunities to integrate the improved varieties with other climate-smart agricultural practices, including conservation agriculture and integrated pest management, to further enhance productivity and sustainability. This breakthrough represents a major step forward in SEARI’s mission to develop and deliver technologies that improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the dryland areas of South Ethiopia.
