SEARI has launched an ambitious community-based sheep breeding program in Gedeo Zone aimed at transforming livestock productivity and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. The program, which officially commenced in May 2026, focuses on selective breeding of indigenous sheep breeds with desirable traits, including faster growth rates, better meat quality, and disease resistance. Through close collaboration with local communities and extension services, the initiative has already registered over 200 farmers who are now actively participating in breeding groups. Farmers are being trained in modern breeding techniques, animal health management, and feed optimization to maximize the genetic potential of their flocks.
Beyond genetic improvement, the program emphasizes building sustainable community institutions for livestock development. Breeding groups are being established as farmer-owned cooperatives that will manage breeding stock, share knowledge, and market their improved livestock collectively. The program also includes a strong monitoring and evaluation component to track performance and adapt practices to local conditions. Early results are encouraging, with participating farmers reporting healthier livestock and improved market prices for their animals. SEARI plans to scale the program to additional zones across South Ethiopia, contributing to the region’s livestock transformation agenda.
