In a remarkable demonstration of social responsibility and community solidarity, SEARI staff and management came together to build two new houses for vulnerable families in Dilla Town. The initiative, which was completed in November 2025, saw employees voluntarily contributing from their monthly salaries to fund the construction of decent, permanent homes for families that had been displaced and were living in precarious conditions. Staff members also participated in the actual construction work, providing hands-on support alongside professional builders to ensure the houses were completed on time and to high quality standards. The homes were officially handed over to the beneficiary families in a ceremony attended by SEARI management, local government officials, and community leaders.

Beyond the physical construction, the initiative reflects SEARI’s deep commitment to corporate social responsibility and its recognition that agricultural research institutions have a vital role to play in addressing broader community challenges. The staff’s collective effort demonstrates the strong culture of empathy and service within the institute, as well as its determination to make a tangible difference in the lives of the most vulnerable members of society. The project has been widely celebrated by the local community and has inspired similar initiatives across the region, showcasing how institutional resources and staff goodwill can be mobilized to address pressing social needs. SEARI has reaffirmed its commitment to continue such community engagement activities as part of its core values.
